Chapter 544 — Thank You

The child’s voice emerged as barely a whisper.

"What if we lose everything, then is winning even worth it?"

The black-haired boy’s lips curved slightly, something that wasn’t quite a smile appearing.

"Maybe not for the usual games, where victory just means one side gets more than the other..."

His other hand rose, settling on the child’s other shoulder so they faced each other directly.

"But in this one? Definitely."

His black eyes blazed brighter.

"After all, when the last move of our game is played, when we finally hold all the power that exists..."

His voice became harder, carrying conviction.

"We will get back everything we lost!"

The implications sat heavy between them, unspoken but understood.

The child’s breathing slowed fractionally, his eyes finding the black-haired boy’s face.

"The only price we need to pay..."

The black-haired boy’s grip became gentle, almost tender.

"Is our pond in exchange for the ocean of our loved ones."

Both their gazes shifted, seeing what it represented with perfect clarity.

Their peace, their rest, their freedom from suffering.

Traded for everyone else’s survival.

"The journey will not be easy."

The black-haired boy continued, his voice becoming stronger.

"We will suffer more than we can imagine! We will need to make decisions that tear us apart! We will fall again and again and again!"

His hand extended, palm up and offering.

"But every single time..."

His fingers spread wide.

"We need to rise back stronger and harder!" He paused. "Just like we always did! Just like we’ve done our entire lives, through every beating and every betrayal and every moment when dying seemed easier than continuing!"

The child stared at the offered hand, his eyes tracking between it and the pond’s still surface.

The black-haired boy’s voice became gentle.

"Because at the core of our very being, that’s who we’ve always been, haven’t we?"

The child’s hand rose slowly, trembling as it moved through the air toward the waiting palm.

"We are–"

Their fingers touched, then clasped.

"–survivors who refuse to break!"

Both voices spoke as one, the declaration resonating across the void.

The child’s grip tightened, squeezing with desperate strength.

And the pond began evaporating, water lifting into mist that dissolved into nothing.

Their reflection stared back from the disappearing surface, two faces becoming one.

The black-haired boy pulled the child forward, out of the water completely, their forms beginning to overlap.

Light bled between them, edges becoming indistinct as the separation faded.

[Attempt 999]

Damian’s awareness snapped back to find himself saying it again.

"Yes."

CRACK

But before the seal could fully shatter, before the transformation could complete, Lysander’s voice exploded through their connection.

"NOOOO!"

The word carried desperation that transcended sound.

"Why?! I did everything like the Sage told! Why did it keep happening?! Why can’t you just–"

’Marshal...’

Damian’s thought cut through the spiral, calm and certain.

’Again.’

Lysander’s presence fractured, confusion bleeding through.

"I... My skill can’t work anymore! I have forgotten the principles! The Law Seed is gone! I can’t–"

’If you have forgotten then–’

Damian’s eyes closed as understanding flashed through his mind with perfect clarity.

Every loop, every reset, every moment of watching Lysander pull them backward...

The mechanics had been drilling themselves into his awareness without conscious recognition, the pattern becoming part of him through sheer repetition.

’–I’ll do it myself.’

His finger rose, pressing against his temple with deliberate calm.

"Time–"

Kinsley’s pleasant expression became confused, his blue eyes going wide.

"You–"

But before another word could emerge, before the Patriarch could react or move or do anything at all...

Damian’s whisper finished the activation.

"–Reversal."

WHOOSH

****

[Attempt 1000]

Reality bent one final time, pulling Damian backward through moments that blurred together.

Then everything snapped into focus with jarring clarity.

But this time felt different, rougher, like forcing a mechanism that hadn’t been properly calibrated.

His new skill pulled him back only seconds, to the heartbeat before Brian’s mouth opened.

Kinsley crouched between them, to the side, his hand still extended toward Brian’s broken form.

Two meters of snow-covered ground separated Damian from his friend.

Brian’s unfocused eyes tracked toward Damian, recognition flickering through the madness.

But before he could say anything–

Whoosh

Damian moved as his body surged forward, closing the distance instantly before anyone watching could even blink.

His arms wrapped around Brian’s massive frame, pulling the broken man against his chest.

’Brian.’

The thought emerged quiet and certain.

’You were my only true friend.’

Brian’s body went rigid, his shattered mind struggling to understand the embrace.

Damian’s hand found the space between Brian’s ribs, his fingers settling against flesh.

’Thank you for everything.’

His expression remained calm despite what came next.

’You can rest now.’

SHLK

His hand drove forward, penetrating through flesh and bone with force.

His fingers found the heart beneath, wrapping around the organ that still beat despite everything.

And the moment his grip closed around it–

BOOM

Thunder exploded across the sky, the sound tearing through clouds that had been silent moments before.

Crimson lightning blazed overhead, painting the field in blood-red light.

Text burned across Damian’s peripheral vision.

[New Title Acquired: True Demon]

Crush

Damian’s fingers crushed the heart completely, the organ bursting in his palm.

And Brian’s entire body jerked once, his mouth opening as blood welled between his lips.

His voice emerged as barely a whisper, the last breath escaping.

"Th-than... you..."

The broken words carried relief so profound it made the torture seem small by comparison.

Then his eyes glazed over, life fleeing completely.

And the moment Brian’s heart stopped, the moment his final breath faded into nothingness–

Damian’s crimson hair began bleeding to pure white.

The change started at the roots, spreading outward strand by strand until no trace of red remained.

BOOM

Black fog erupted from his body, thick and dense, pouring outward in waves that swallowed light.

The Despair manifested without conscious thought, his grief made physical.

"..."

Silence fell across thousands of assembled witnesses, across billions watching through screens.

Nobody moved or breathed as every camera captured the moment.

And across the universe, in hidden sanctuaries and sealed chambers, in floating cities and underground temples, every seer and every oracle heard the same thing.

An ancient voice resonated directly into their minds, speaking with authority that made reality feel thin.

The words emerged in a language that predated civilization itself, yet every listener understood perfectly.

"Born of two lives yet belonging to neither, shaped by suffering yet refusing to break... The True Demon of the universe finally awakens."

The declaration rang across existence, touching every being capable of seeing beyond the present moment.

And in that frozen field, surrounded by thousands of witnesses, Damian knelt with Brian’s corpse in his arms.

His white hair fell forward, obscuring his face.

Black fog poured from his body in endless waves.

And the title burned in his awareness, permanent and unchangeable: True Demon.

The name that would echo across eternity, spoken in fear and reverence by every race that learned what it meant.

The beginning of the end of every game.
